Meteor Crater

 

The Flagstaff, Arizona, area enjoys a distinction which is possibly unique in the world. Within a one-hour drive, you can observe a giant meteor crater impacted on a barren plain. The crater measuring 550 feet deep & 2.4 miles in circumference was formed more than 50,000 years ago when a gigantic meteorite, hurtling through space at 40,000 miles per hour, struck with an explosive force in the rocky plains of Northern Arizona. Visit the meteor crater museum & take an educational video explaining the crater's origin before venturing to the observation decks. You can also walk the 3-mile circumference trail around the rim. A telescope is available at no charge.
